Gukesh, Alireza Firouzja, Arjun Erigaisi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Hans Niemann, Dmitry Andreikin, Nihal Sarin, and Pranesh M. Held in Chennai, the event featured a single round-robin format where every game had a significant impact on the final standings.
French Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja emerged as the undisputed champion after an impressive week of consistent and aggressive chess. Entering the final round as the sole leader, Firouzja secured the title by drawing with India’s Arjun Erigaisi, finishing clear of the field and reaffirming his status as one of the world’s strongest players. His victory was built on clinical preparation, tactical precision, and remarkable composure under pressure.
The battle for second place proved equally thrilling. Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov still had a chance to force a playoff for first with a victory in the final round. However, while pressing hard for the full point, he overextended his position and suffered a costly defeat against Russia’s Dmitry Andreikin. Andreikin’s resilient performance throughout the tournament, including finishing unbeaten, earned him second place on tiebreaks, while Abdusattorov settled for third.
For World Champion D. Gukesh, the tournament was a difficult outing. Facing the possibility of dropping below the coveted 2700 Elo mark, Gukesh opted for a pragmatic approach in the final round against Hans Niemann. By sacrificing a bishop, he steered the game toward perpetual check and secured a quick draw, successfully preserving his place in the 2700-rating club despite finishing at the bottom of the standings.
The tournament highlighted the ever-increasing depth of elite chess. Firouzja’s triumph, Andreikin’s consistency, Arjun Erigaisi’s fighting performances, and the emergence of India’s young talents once again demonstrated why the Chennai Grand Masters has become one of the most prestigious events on the international chess calendar.
